In honor of National Nurses Week, High Peaks Hospice celebrates all of our dedicated nurses who walk alongside patients and families each and every day. Their compassion, skill, and presence helps so many during a difficult and vulnerable time.

A few of our staff recently shared some insight on themselves that we share with you today — their words help tell the story of what this work truly means.

Also included are some words from families we have had the privilege to care for – a true testament of the impact these nurses, and all of our hospice staff, have made on the lives of families in our communities.

Thank you Casey, Robyn and Morgan for your insight you shared below.

What led you to become a nurse—and what drew you to hospice care?

“I learned about hospice through the experience of my grandmother-in-law coming onto hospice service. She was transitioning, and her 16 children were not all on the same page. As her primary caregiver, I had to help manage the situation. Even though it was a short time on service, I could see how important this work is for the community and the impact our nursing team has on families.”

Casey Gosselin, BSN, RN, Case Manager & RN Supervisor

“I became a nurse because my grandmother was very ill growing up. She told me I should become a nurse—and made me promise. I always wanted to be the kind of nurse who not only cared for patients medically, but made them feel seen and heard.

After my grandmother passed away in an ICU surrounded by tubes and IVs, I knew she wouldn’t have wanted to die in a hospital, and I knew I wanted to become a hospice nurse.”

Robyn Ashline, LPN

“I have always been drawn to the personal connection with patients, and hospice really allows for that. You get to treat more than just a medical issue—you focus on the whole person and their loved ones.”

Morgan Cox, RN

Moments That Stay With Us

“There are a handful of families that have left a special place in my heart. Usually, they are the ones who overcome a major struggle with hospice support and express so much gratitude. It validates that our staff truly make a positive impact on the people they touch every day.”

— Casey

“There are many moments in my hospice career where patients and families have touched my heart—from life advice to personal stories they shared. Every patient takes a piece of my heart with them, and I leave with a piece of theirs.”

— Robyn

What We Wish More People Understood About Hospice

“I always hope to spread the word that hospice is about more than the final few hours or days of life. Our team’s best work is often done over weeks and months. I wish people knew how all-encompassing the circle of care is.”

— Casey

“I wish more people knew that hospice isn’t just there to ‘help someone die.’ We care for our patients like we would our own family. We strive to keep every patient as comfortable as possible and support both the patient and their loved ones through peace and grief. Hospice isn’t just a service—it’s a privilege and an honor.”

— Robyn

“I wish more people understood that hospice is not only for the very end. It is a much better experience for the whole family if we get to know each other early on and develop a trusting relationship.”

— Morgan

Why We Keep Coming Back

“I value every person who contributes to this team and greatly enjoy the collaboration. We make a difference for patients, their families, and each other.”

— Casey

“I keep doing this work because it is an honor and a privilege. I get to walk beside people during one of the most difficult times in life and bring comfort instead of fear. Every patient teaches me something about life, love, hardship, and humanity.”

— Robyn

“It’s not easy work, but it is meaningful and rewarding in ways my previous nursing jobs were not. Showing up for people in their darkest moments has made me not just a better nurse, but has shifted my perspective in all areas of my life.”

— Morgan

Hospice is about more than medical care.

It’s about connection.

It’s about dignity.

It’s about being present for patients and families during some of life’s most difficult moments.

Every day, our team helps ensure no one faces the end-of-life journey alone.

Thank you to all of our staff and volunteers who bring compassion, comfort, and care to the families we serve.

With gratitude,
