Your Voice, Your Care: A Note on Medical Aid in Dying in New York
Navigating a terminal illness brings many deeply personal decisions. At High Peaks Hospice, we are deeply committed to honoring your end-of-life wishes, respecting your autonomy, and supporting your loved ones. We recognize that some patients may wish to exercise their legal right under the New York Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) Act.
High Peaks Hospice is neither for nor against an individual’s personal choice to pursue medical aid in dying. If you wish to explore this legal right, our team will always respond to your questions with the utmost respect and compassion, free of judgment. We will continue to provide you with the same high-quality, comprehensive hospice services we deliver to all patients in our care.
How High Peaks Hospice Coordinates with Your Wishes:
- Your Hospice Care Continues: We do not provide, deliver, pay for, or administer MAID medications, and our employed physicians do not serve as prescribing or consulting doctors for the Act. However, we remain fully dedicated to your daily care.Â
- Presence & Comfort: Our clinical teams are always available to respond to your care location for symptom management and physical care which includes following the ingestion of medication.Â
Our focus remains entirely on being by your side, managing your symptoms, and supporting the people you love.Â
For families looking for help navigating the specific legal step-by-step process or finding participating doctors, NYS-approved resources include New York State Department of Health and the advocacy organization End of Life Choices New York.Â
